Guatemala elected President intends to break relations with Venezuela

Guatemala president-elect Alejandro Giammattei said on Monday that he intends to break off diplomatic relations with Venezuela after his inauguration on January 14, 2020.

“We are going to do this on January 14. We are going to completely break off relations with Venezuela President Nicholas Maduro,” said the politician.

The future president of Guatemala noted that his government would recognize the leader of the Venezuelan opposition, Juan Guaido, as president of the Bolivarian Republic.

Giammattei was elected as President of Guatemala on August 11 – he won about 60% of the vote.
