Italy to hold fresh elections: Matteo Salvini

Italy is going to hold fresh elections due to internal bickering in the government which has been affecting coalition, for months.

The leader of Italy’s ruling League party, Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini said in a statement he had told Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte that the alliance with 5-Star had failed after a year in power and “we should quickly give the choice back to the voters”.

Conte said that Salvini needs to explain to Italians the reason to bring down the government and that “the crisis he has unleashed” should be the clearest “in the history of the republic”.

After the sudden announcement, the clash has started between the right-wing League and its coalition partner, the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement, and it drives the euro zone’s third-largest economy into political uncertainty.

Parliament will reconvene next week to carry out the necessary steps.
