The winner of Guatemala presidential election Alejandro Giammattei has commented on the agreement which states that the ‘safe third country’ deal regulating where migrants can apply for asylum, made by Guatemala former president Jimmy Morales with the United States.

Alejandro Giammattei said that such a concept must be ratified by the congresses of both countries- Hondurans and Salvadorans, who agree to the deal.

The move was taken to reduce U.S. asylum claims, provoked extensive objection from rights groups over the risks of entering vulnerable people to a country with poverty and violence.
