As the political and economic tensions between South Korea and Japan rises President Donald Trump has offered to mediate to ease the dispute which threatens smartphones and memory chips global supplies as Japan this month restricted exports to South Korea of high tech materials.

The two countries are the biggest US allies in Asia and the Trump administration was careful to not get into the dispute until now and according to the US president, he was asked by South Korea president to get involved and it has been confirmed by South Korea’s spokes woman Ko Min-jung as she said that they were concerned about the Japanese media constantly reporting on the possibility of an economic retaliation against South Korea.

Japan has cited ‘inadequate management’ on exportation to South Korea of sensitive items as the reason of the dispute claiming that the exports items ended up in North Korea instead.
