US presidential elections: Sanders clears the way to Biden

Former Vice President Joe Biden became the candidate to confront Republican President Donald Trump in the November 3 election after US Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders suspended his campaign on Wednesday.

Sanders, the Social Democrat who promised to lead a popular political revolution in the White House, admitted that his path to running was difficult and pledged to work with Biden to confront Trump.

“After that, together, we will go ahead to defeat Donald Trump, the most dangerous president in modern American history,” he said in a speech to his supporters from his hometown, Burlington, Vermont.

Senator Sanders, Democratic Socialist whose progressive agenda had drawn the party sharply to the left, had taken the lead in the Democratic race at first before retracting quickly after losing the primaries in South Carolina in February when moderate Democrats intensified their support for the Biden campaign.

The departure of Sanders, Biden’s last remaining rival, paves the way for a battle between Biden and Trump who is seeking a second four-year term.

Biden praised Sanders and promised to use his ideas in his campaign to reach the White House. Sanders’ decision comes as the country grapples with the outbreak of the Coronavirus, which has postponed some primary elections.
