War on Masks: Trump attacks Biden over the mask row, Fauci supports the ‘mask wearing advisory’

A simple advisory by WHO and health professionals of wearing masks as preventive measure against coronavirus has taken a political turn. As President Donald Trump openly flaunts his “non-mask wearing tradition”, he continues to mock and criticize those who do.

Mask wearing act has turned into a cultural and political standpoint.

President Donald Trump has regularly refused to follow the ‘ethics code’ by a president as a message to his citizens. He has defied the advice of his own government, assaulting the science and civility.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, U.S. top infectious disease expert and a member of the coronavirus task force at White House can however be seen wearing mask in all his public appearances, advocating its use. He told CNN in an interview on Wednesday that “he wears a mask for people to see that’s the kind of thing you should be doing.”

In a recent development, President Trump and his administration are taking a jibe at Democratic Presidential candidate Joe Biden after he wore a mask during Memorial Day service. The White House mocked Joe Biden for wearing a mask in public labeling it as an “elite liberal fear-mongering” practice.

Biden responded in his first in-person interview to CNN since the pandemic unfolded lashing out at President Trump. He said that President’s “falsely masculine” behaviour is taking a toll on citizens’ lives and said that a president must lead by example.

Presidential candidate Joe Biden said, “He’s a fool, an absolute fool to talk that way. I mean every leading doc in the world is saying you should wear a mask when you’re in a crowd.”

With United States of America leading the charts with maximum number of detected coronavirus cases, a political match over a mask seems trivial of all things.

Dr. Fauci on Wednesday said that how important and effective wearing masks is. He warned against premature opening of states and called for a cautious approach while imploring the Americans to continue wearing masks in public. Fauci further said that wearing a mask is a symbol of “showing respect to others” and that it is “100% effective”. He further said, “I want to protect myself and protect others, and also because I want to make it be a symbol for people to see that that’s the kind of thing you should be doing.”

President Trump also attacked a White House press member for wearing a mask while asking him questions during daily press meet.

The showdown between Trump and Biden has politicized a simple act of wearing a mask, a scenario that can take a toll on public health efforts across the U.S. in a worst case scenario. With many states leading in the positive cases tally and reopening of the country, this latest “mask controversy” can take an ugly turn.
